Royal Enfield Taurus: The Diesel Legend on Two Wheels

There are motorcycles that go fast. And then there's the Taurus. Its slow roar and unmistakable diesel smell tell a different story: that of the only mass-produced diesel motorcycle in the history of motorcycling.

A roar outside the box

In the 1980s, in India, Royal Enfield decided to address the need for an affordable, durable, and tireless vehicle. The solution? It took the Bullet's chassis and fitted it with a diesel engine. Thus was born the Royal Enfield Taurus Diesel , also known as the Bullet Diesel 325.

Technical features

  • Engine: 325cc, single-cylinder, diesel, air-cooled
  • Power: about 6.5 HP
  • Torque: high at low revs
  • Consumption: up to 80-90 km/l
  • Starting: pedal or crank
  • Weight: 196 kg
  • Maximum speed: approximately 70 km/h

Diesel: pros and cons

The diesel engine offered a unique ride: slow, noisy, but remarkably efficient . Perfect for those in a hurry and looking for a faithful companion. However, it also had limitations:

  • Difficult cold start
  • Intense vibrations
  • Limited performance
  • High environmental impact

A cult for purists and collectors

The Taurus never tried to please everyone. It was rugged, authentic, almost rustic . And that's precisely why it gained a loyal following. In Europe, where it arrived in small numbers with Lombardini or Greaves engines, today it's a collector's item.

The end of an era

With the advent of more stringent environmental regulations, the Royal Enfield Taurus was retired in the early 2000s. Diesel could no longer compete, and Royal Enfield focused on the petrol models that would relaunch it worldwide.

A legend that endures

Today, the Taurus isn't just a motorcycle. It's a hymn to slowness , a mechanical reminder of a different era. Whoever owns one rides a story, not just a vehicle. To date, it's the only mass-produced diesel motorcycle with regular homologation in India and is a symbol and cult object in enthusiast circles.
