Are modern motorcycles really more reliable?

“Motorcycles of the past were more robust.” It's a phrase you often hear, perhaps uttered over coffee or reading comments online. Fewer electronics, more iron, fewer problems. But is this really the case? Are modern motorcycles less reliable or simply different ?
It's a legitimate question, especially for those new to the world of two-wheelers and wanting to understand what to expect from a modern motorcycle.
What we mean when we talk about reliability
When it comes to reliability, it's not just a matter of "breaking or not breaking." For a motorcycle, being reliable means above all being predictable , safe, and consistent over time.
An engine that always starts, brakes that respond consistently, a chassis that performs as you expect. And, most importantly, a bike that lasts without requiring constant intervention, but above all, it's safe!
Yesterday's motorcycles: simple, sincere, but less protective
Motorcycles from a few years ago had one great quality: simplicity. Few electronic components, basic mechanics, everything easier to understand even for non-technical people.
This made them robust and often very long-lasting. But at the same time, safety standards were very different . Sudden braking, rain, dirty asphalt: everything depended almost exclusively on the driver's experience.
Modern motorcycles and changing standards
Today, the world of motorcycles has changed, and not just because of technology. Safety, quality, and reliability standards have also changed.
ABS, electronic controls, and more precise engine management aren't meant to complicate the bike, but to make it safer and more consistent. This means fewer errors, less stress on components, and greater peace of mind for the rider.
Furthermore, modern motorcycles are designed to last longer, with better materials and stricter controls already during the production phase.
So: are modern motorcycles better than vintage ones?
The answer isn't black and white. Motorcycles of the past had a unique charm and more straightforward mechanics. Modern motorcycles, on the other hand, are more reliable in the broadest sense of the word : safer, more stable, and more suitable for everyday use.
If a motorcycle today seems "more complex," it's because it meets different needs than in the past. And in many cases, this complexity simply translates into greater peace of mind when riding .
Perhaps, rather than asking ourselves whether modern motorcycles are better or worse, it's worth asking ourselves what we're really looking for when we get on a motorbike.
